A Sprint is a burst of effort that will result in a usable, releasable piece of the project or product.

Sprints are

  • Timed - usually 2 week long intervals.
  • Static (mostly) - no changes that might impact the Sprint goal should be made.
  • Iterative - when one ends, another one begins.
  • Represent your work in progress (WIP) 

Projects are like running marathons. Sprints allow project owners to break down the project into smaller and more manageable races.  This allows you to be constantly producing while still working towards the end goal.  It also allows you to remain flexible to changes and new information.

Let's review it in process:

Jane's writing a textbook and her publisher is requesting the book for completion within the year.  To break down the daunting 1200 page task, Jane is using Sprints to reach her goal.

Jane knows that she can write a chapter in 2 weeks.  She creates the title of the Chapter and begins planning each component necessary for the chapter.  In Leantime, she begins to create these smaller sections as her To Do's.

She decides she can complete 6 sections within the two week period and her To Do's look like this:

  1. Chapter Introduction
  2. The Microbiology of Viruses
  3. Flu Viruses
  4. Animals
  5. Humans
  6. Conclusion

Jane can now drag and drop these along her To Do's on the Kanban board and time her work tracked.  As she moves her To Do's along the Kanban board columns, she can begin to better see her progress, understand her flow and get better estimates on where she is and when she can finish her project. As she finishes her To Do's, the burn down chart on the dashboard will be updated to give her a visualization of her progress.
